Gómez Applauds Major Investments in Hampden District Public Housing
Senator Adam Gómez today highlighted significant progress in public housing upgrades across the Hampden District, as part of a statewide initiative by the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (HLC). These improvements are powered by investments from the Affordable Homes Act and other critical capital resources.
Massachusetts oversees approximately 43,000 units of state-funded public housing. This fall alone, 54 construction contracts totaling $26.1 million were authorized to modernize aging systems, improve safety, and ensure homes are ready for families and seniors who need them most.
“These investments are a game-changer for Hampden County residents,” said Senator Gómez. “Safe, modern, and accessible housing is the foundation of strong communities. I’m proud to see Chicopee and Springfield receiving the resources they need to upgrade public housing and provide dignity and security for our neighbors.”
Local Impact in Hampden District:
Chicopee Housing Authority: $269,500 for roof replacement
Springfield Housing Authority: $1,431,750 for fire alarm system upgrades (funded through the American Rescue Plan Act)
These projects address long-overdue capital needs, including:
Life-safety upgrades such as fire alarm systems
Electrical improvements to modernize aging infrastructure
Roof and building-envelope repairs for weather protection
Site, drainage, and paving improvements for safety and accessibility
Interior modernization for common areas and individual units
Secretary Ed Augustus emphasized the statewide commitment: “The Affordable Homes Act gave Massachusetts the tools to make serious progress on public housing, and we’re using those resources to ensure every possible unit is available for residents who need it.”
