Gómez joins Governor Healey at Food Bank Amid SNAP Cuts

Governor Maura Healey visited the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts this week to meet with staff, volunteers, and local leaders as the region grapples with the fallout from recent federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The visit highlighted the critical role food banks play in supporting families facing hunger, especially as demand for emergency food assistance continues to surge. The Food Bank reported a dramatic increase in calls for help — up more than 600% — as households struggle to make ends meet.

Governor Healey reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to food security, praising the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP) and pledging continued support for organizations on the front lines.

“There is no shame in asking for help,” said Governor Healey. “We are doing everything we can to make sure federal resources are distributed quickly and equitably to those who need them most.”

State Senator Adam Gomez, who joined the Governor during the visit, underscored the urgency of the moment and the need for continued advocacy.

“The federal cuts to SNAP are not just numbers on a spreadsheet — they’re real consequences for real people in our communities,” said Senator Gomez. “Governor Healey’s visit today sends a powerful message that Massachusetts will not stand by while our most vulnerable neighbors are left behind. We’re going to keep fighting to protect access to food, dignity, and basic human needs.”

The visit is part of a broader effort by the Healey-Driscoll administration to spotlight food insecurity and push for stronger federal and state-level support.
