Gómez Pushes for Stronger Fair Housing Protections in Massachusetts

Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) announced today that the Massachusetts Senate will take up legislation next week aimed at reinforcing fair housing practices and combating discrimination in the real estate industry.

The bill (S.2947), originally filed by Senator Gómez, would require mandatory Fair Housing Law training for all real estate agent applicants, ensuring they are educated on how to prevent discrimination against potential buyers or renters based on race, national origin, religion, disability, age, and other protected demographics. This training would also become a requirement for license renewal, creating ongoing accountability with the profession.

In addition to education, the legislation strengthens enforcement measures. For repeated cases of discrimination, the penalty for license suspension would increase from 90 days to 180 days. The bill also mandates that data on housing discrimination complaints be made publicly available on an annual basis, promoting transparency and public awareness.

“Fair housing is a fundamental right,” said Senator Gómez. “This legislation ensures that real estate professionals are equipped with the knowledge and responsibility to uphold that right, while holding bad actors accountable.”

The proposal cleared the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure in October and is expected to be debated by the Senate next week.
