Senator Gómez Honors Jynai McDonald as 2026 Commonwealth Heroine

Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) is proud to announce that Jynai McDonald, Founding CEO of Urban Impact Initiative Massachusetts, has been named a 2026 Commonwealth Heroine by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW).

The Commonwealth Heroines program honors women across Massachusetts who make extraordinary contributions to their communities but often do so outside the public spotlight. McDonald was nominated by Senator Gómez in recognition of her transformative leadership, advocacy, and service to families throughout Springfield and across the Commonwealth.

“Jynai McDonald exemplifies what it means to be a Commonwealth Heroine,” said Senator Gómez. “Through her leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to families in Springfield and beyond, Jynai has built programs and institutions that directly improve lives. Her work reflects the very best of public service—meeting urgent needs while building long-term opportunity for those too often left behind. I am proud to nominate her for this well-deserved recognition.”

A Springfield native, McDonald is the Founding CEO of Urban Impact Initiative Massachusetts, a community-based nonprofit with a social enterprise model focused on addressing poverty through education, economic empowerment, and health equity.

Under her leadership, Urban Impact has expanded services and programming that support:

  • Youth development and family-focused initiatives

  • Women in recovery support programs

  • Re-entry services with a focus on women of color

  • Seasonal emergency shelter operations for unhoused residents

  • Direct community support and crisis response efforts

McDonald is also spearheading the redevelopment of the historic Gunn Block building in downtown Springfield—one of the city’s oldest commercial structures—transforming it into a long-term community asset for programming, services, and neighborhood revitalization.

Prior to founding Urban Impact, McDonald served in equity-focused leadership roles with SEIU Local 509 and the Common Start Coalition, and previously chaired the Board of Trustees at Springfield Technical Community College.

McDonald will be honored alongside the full Class of 2026 Commonwealth Heroines at the 23rd Annual Commonwealth Heroines Celebration on June 24, 2026, at the Massachusetts State House.

Senator Gómez also congratulated the other Hampden County women recognized as 2026 Commonwealth Heroines:

  • Xiomara Albán DeLobato of Wilbraham

  • Charlene M. Naylor of Springfield

  • Gladys Oyola-Lopez of Springfield

  • Bonny Rathbone of Palmer

  • Carla Sarno of Springfield
