Senator Gómez Secures $4.5M for Springfield Priorities in Senate Economic Development Bill
Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) successfully secured $4.5 million in targeted investments for Springfield as part of the Massachusetts Senate's comprehensive economic development bond bill, legislation designed to strengthen local economies, expand housing, support innovation, and create jobs across the Commonwealth. The Senate approved the legislation following two days of debate.
The investments championed by Senator Gómez will support five transformational projects that address Springfield's housing needs, strengthen the region's health care economy, expand tourism opportunities, and invest in workforce development and family services.
The funding secured by Senator Gómez includes:
$1 million for the City of Springfield's Housing Strategy to fund pre-development work on city-owned properties slated for multifamily housing.
$1 million for Baystate Health to modernize facilities, expand clinical capacity, and support regional job creation following the acquisition of a community hospital.
$1.5 million for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for capital improvements and accessibility upgrades that enhance tourism and community programming.
$500,000 for The Birthplace Foundation to advance planning and infrastructure for a premier basketball destination in Springfield that promotes tourism and youth programming.
$500,000 for Square One to support construction of a new family resource center and workforce development hub.
"Every one of these investments is about building a stronger future for Springfield," said Senator Adam Gómez. "Whether we're creating new housing, strengthening our regional health care system, investing in family services, or expanding destinations that drive tourism and economic activity, these projects reflect the priorities our community has consistently identified. Together, they will create jobs, improve quality of life, and position Springfield for long-term growth. I'm proud to have secured these investments and grateful to my Senate colleagues for recognizing the importance of continuing to invest in Western Massachusetts."
Among the largest investments secured by Senator Gómez is $1 million to advance Springfield's Housing Strategy, providing critical pre-development funding to prepare city-owned properties for multifamily housing construction. The investment builds on ongoing efforts to increase the city's housing supply and create more affordable housing opportunities for residents.
The legislation also includes $1 million for Baystate Health to support facility modernization, clinical expansion, and capital improvements that will strengthen the region's largest health care system while preserving and creating high-quality jobs in Western Massachusetts.
Recognizing Springfield's unique place as the Birthplace of Basketball, Senator Gómez secured $2 million in tourism and economic development investments, including $1.5 million for capital improvements and accessibility upgrades at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and $500,000 to advance planning and infrastructure improvements for The Birthplace Foundation's vision of creating a premier basketball destination that will attract visitors from around the world while expanding opportunities for local youth.
The bill also provides $500,000 for Square One to support construction of a new family resource center and workforce development hub, expanding access to critical services for children and families while strengthening workforce development opportunities in Springfield.
The Senate's economic development bill authorizes $575.4 million in investments to support housing production, scientific research, small businesses, workforce development, emerging technologies, and regional economic growth throughout Massachusetts. The legislation now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration. If enacted, the bond authorizations included in the bill would be eligible for funding through the Commonwealth’s capital investment plan, subject to gubernatorial approval and bond authorization.
