Springfield Public Schools Awarded $261,800 to Expand 21st Century Community Learning Centers Programming
State Senator Adam Gomez joined the Department of Education and Secondary Education today in announcing that Springfield Public Schools has been awarded $261,800 through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Continuation and Enhancement Grant. The federally funded Title IV‑B grant supports academically enriching out‑of‑school time programming — including both summer learning and school‑year activities — designed to deepen student learning and strengthen whole‑student development.
Gomez had this to say on the funding being released today, “I am grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration and our federal delegation for this continued investment in our students and community. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant allows the schools to expand high‑quality out‑of‑school programming that deepens learning, strengthens engagement, and opens new pathways for student success. This funding supports our commitment to creating welcoming, enriching environments where every student can grow academically and personally. I look forward to building on this momentum and delivering even more opportunities for Springfield’s learners.”
The grant aligns with statewide priorities including DESE’s Educational Vision, the Power of Presence attendance and engagement initiative, and the Vision of a Graduate, ensuring that students have increased opportunities to engage, grow, and thrive in supportive learning environments.
Approximately 15,000 students statewide benefit annually from programming supported through 21st CCLC grants. This year, 37 applicants will receive a combined $18.6 million to fund over 105 sites, including up to $1.7 million dedicated to program enhancements.
Springfield Public Schools’ award will support continuation of successful school‑year and summer programs and may incorporate optional enhancement opportunities such as:
• High School Internship Programs that introduce students to careers in education while providing support to younger learners.
• Family Engagement and Playful Learning Initiatives that strengthen school‑family partnerships and expand hands‑on learning.
• Summer Program Enhancements that increase access to high‑quality enrichment opportunities focused on academic growth, physical well‑being, and inclusive, welcoming spaces.
DESE continues to prioritize expanded learning time as a key strategy to support student engagement, learning recovery, and long‑term success.
