Gomez Secures Funding for Community Health Initiative in Springfield

State Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) has announced that an initiative he sponsored during the Senate budget debate aimed at boosting community health in Springfield was adopted by the body. Through an amendment submitted by the third term Senator, the Baystate Medical Center WOW (Wellness in Wheels) Bus will receive $50,000 to assist in outreach to residents, particularly in North End Springfield.

Gómez had this to say on the amendment being adopted, “The WOW Bus meets individuals where they live and work to ensure greater access to preventative services. This is a model of what healthcare access should look like: proactive, inclusive and rooted in community trust.”

The WOW Bus travels to communities in and around Springfield providing free or low-cost screenings, health education, and counseling. The Bus meets them where they live and work, connecting with the community by offering preventive medicine, teaching classes and serving as a COVID-19 mobile unit. The Bus brings preventive care to the community, along with a classroom on wheels that educates the next generation of medical professionals.
